Bones
When the men of the future dig up my grave
They’ll find the bones of a girl who didn’t behave
The bones of a woman whose own life she saved
The bones of a girl who found ways to be brave
When the queers of tomorrow meet with my ghost
They’ll know that she wandered from coast to coast
Searching for those who would love her the most
All while being battered from pillar to post
They’ll say she was looking for peace and for joy
That she wasted her youth acting like a boy
Throttled and rattled like she was a toy
All for the crime of wanting to enjoy
A life formed from pieces she had to remake
All because her birth had made an honest mistake
And while there were those who called that life fake
Despite jeers and jabs, they never could break
The spirit of this girl who never behaved
Of this woman who found a way to be saved
A woman who figured out how to be brave
That’s what they’ll find when they dig up my grave
