Angie Kinman

I am a writer and a retired teacher living in Nashville, Tennessee. I taught 2nd and 3rd grades for 34 years and continue to enjoy working from home as a reading interventionist. I have always passionately used poetry in creative ways to instill a love for reading while teaching important skills in every subject. For example, a poem about magnets, the seven continents, phonics patterns, sight words, or parts of speech adds so much joy to learning. I also taught students to write and illustrate many types of poems, i.e. cinquains, haiku, diamante, and concrete poems.

I am married and the mother of three children. It was after losing my oldest child, who had cerebral palsy, that reading and writing poetry became a daily ritual and an important source of healing. I am inspired by the captivating beauty in nature. I believe this stems from growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. My favorite poets are Mary Oliver, Robert Frost, and Emily Dickenson, and my favorite children’s poets are Shel Silverstein and Karla Kuskin.
